Italian painter in the International Gothic style.
Originally named Gentile di Niccolo di Giovanni di Massio, he was
named after his birthplace, Fabriano in the Marches. He carried out
important commissions in several major Italian art centres and was
recognized as one of the foremost artists of his day, but most of the
work on which his great contemporary reputation was based has been
destroyed. It included frescos in the Doges’ Palace in Venice (1408)
and for St John Lateran in Rome (1427). In between he worked in
Florence, Siena, and Orvieto.

Giovanni di
Paolo, in full Giovanni di Paolo di Grazia (born c.
1403, Siena, Republic of Siena [Italy] — died 1482, Siena),
painter whose religious paintings maintained the mystical intensity
and conservative style of Gothic decorative painting against the
trend, progressively dominant in the art of 15th-century Tuscany,
toward scientific naturalism and classical humanism. One of the
last practitioners of the tradition of medieval painting, he did
little to influence the course of art over the four centuries after
his death. In the 20th century, however, his tense, often highly
dramatic works aroused increasing interest.

Arshile
Gorky, born, 1904, Turkish Armenia; died, 1948, Connecticut,
was born Vosdanik Adoian in the village of Khorkom, province of
Van, Armenia, on April 15, 1904. The Adoians became refugees from
the Turkish invasion; Gorky himself left Van in 1915 and arrived in
the United States about March 1, 1920. He stayed with relatives in
Watertown, Massachusetts, and with his father, who had settled in
Providence, Rhode Island. By 1922 he lived in Watertown and taught
at the New School of Design in Boston. In 1925 he moved to New York
and changed his name to Arshile Gorky. He entered the Grand Central
School of Art in New York as a student but soon became an
instructor of drawing; from 1926 to 1931 he was a member of the
faculty. Throughout the 1920s Gorky’s painting was influenced by
Georges Braque,
Paul Cézanne,
and, above all,
Pablo Picasso.

Artist and teacher,
Alexandre Hogue was born in Memphis, Missouri, on February
22, 1898, and grew up in Denton, Texas. After graduating from high
school in Dallas, he attended the Minneapolis College of Art and
Design and later worked as a commercial artist in New York City. In
1925 he returned to Dallas to devote himself to painting and for
several years made annual sketching trips to the Davis Mountains
and Big Bend country of Texas or to Taos, New Mexico, which he
first visited in 1920. His painting Studio Corner, Taos was exhibited
at the National Academy of Design in 1928. The following year he
mounted his first solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721).
A French rococo artist whose charming and graceful paintings show his
interest in theater and ballet, Antoine Watteau is probably best know for
his fetes galantes. These romantic and idealized scenes depict elaborately
costumed ladies and gentlemen at play in fanciful outdoor settings.

Ferdinand Hodler was born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1853, the son of a carpenter. When he was five his father died and his mother remarried. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a landscape artist in Thun, and when he was 18 he studied painting with another in Geneva. This was a training that was thorough, rather than inspired, though it made him familiar with Hans Holbein the Younger, Rembrandt, and the landscapes of Camille Corot.
