John Singer Sargent (born January 12, 1856 in Florence, Italy – died April 24, 1925 (age 69) in London), an expatriate American, he showed remarkable technical precocity as a painter. After studying with Carolus-Duran, he achieved a great reputation for his portraits, employing a style that could be seen as derived from Velazquez by way of Manet. Moving in the circle of the Impressionists, he came to know most of them, and they reacted to his work in varying ways. Degas, as might have been expected, was brutally dismissive; Pissarro, in sending his son to see him in London, where Sargent spent the major part of his working life, described him as ‘an adroit performer’; but with Monet he had a close and mutually profitable relationship. In the 1880s he began to paint landscapes that were overtly Impressionist in technique and approach, despite a certain superficiality. At this time he visited Monet at Giverny on several occasions, painting two memorable portraits of him: Claude Monet Painting at the Edge of a Wood (c.1885; Tate Gallery, London) and Claude Monet in his Bateau-Atelier (1887; National Gallery of Art, Washington). Although Monet was later to deny that Sargent was an Impressionist, this was unjust, especially in relation to some of his works in the 1880s and 1890s. Indeed, Sargent’s technique for painting large canvases out of doors, as evinced in Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885-86; Tate Gallery, London), was to be of use to Monet in his larger compositions. Sargent persuaded Monet to exhibit at the New English Art Club, and at the Leicester Galleries in London.

By the turn of the century Sargent was recognized as the most acclaimed international society portraitist of the Edwardian era, and his clientele included the most affluent, aristocratic, and fashionable people of his time. Sargent chafed in later life at the limitations of portraiture, and around the turn of the century he worked increasingly at other subjects and in other mediums, particularly watercolor, in which he was extraordinarily gifted.

Mantegna, Andrea (1431?-1506). An Italian painter and engraver, Mantegna painted heroic figures, often using a dramatic perspective that gives the viewer the illusion of looking up from below. The effect is somewhat the same as looking up from ground level at statues mounted on a pedestal.

Paul Gustave Doré (1833–83), was a French illustrator, etcher, painter, and sculptor. He was born at Strassburg, Jan. 6, 1833, the son of an engineer. His talent was very precocious. At the age of 12 he drew sketches for lithographs, and in his fifteenth year he was regularly employed as an illustrator by the Journal pour Rire, at the same time exhibiting series of pen sketches in the salons. He had but little education in art, and the demand for his designs was too great to allow him the requisite leisure for technical training. As a caricaturist, he was successful, but he soon turned his attention to the illustration of books. His Rabelais Illustré, which appeared in 1854, established his reputation, and this work was followed by an incredible number of others, equally famous. He was not only popular in France, but in the United States and throughout Europe, especially in England, where there was a Doré cult. He worked with amazing facility and fecundity, acquiring great sums of money through his art. He was made a chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1861 and officer in 1879. He died in Paris, Jan. 23, 1883.

Original name ALESSANDRO DI MARIANO FILIPEPI (born 1445, Florence [Italy] – died May 17, 1510, Florence), Florentine early Renaissance painter whose Birth of Venus (c. 1485) and Primavera (1477–78) are often said to epitomize for modern viewers the spirit of the Renaissance. His ecclesiastical commissions included work for all the major churches of Florence and for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His name is derived from his elder brother Giovanni, a pawnbroker, who was called Il Botticello (“The Little Barrel”).

Alfred Stevens (born 1823, Bruxelles, died 1906, Paris), was a Belgian painter and lithographer. Born in Belgium, Stevens chose to spend his adult life in Paris where he was a comrade of the French Impressionists. Though never actually one of them, he embraced many of their artistic innovations, including the broken brushwork, dark swaths of background color, and Japanese elements evident in this painting. He became famous for his society portraits of beautiful aristocratic women and fairly early in his career, became ‘hors concours,’ an honor which meant his automatic acceptance at every exhibition of the Paris Salon.

José Guadalupe Posada was a prolific printmaker and illustrator, with a powerful body of work that belied the relatively quiet life he led. He was born to German Posada and Petra Aguilar, both poor and of peasant origin, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, in 1852. He began to show artistic promise at a very young age, copying religious cards or prints in bibles to help his brother Cirilo, a schoolteacher, with his youngest students. Though he attended a drawing academy directed by Antonio Varela, he did not stay long, instead preferring to teach himself what he could before working at the lithography shop of Trinidad Pedrozo. Here, he did illustrations for the newspaper El Jicote Ilustrado, earning his first recognition as an artist by the public.

Cy Twombly was born Edwin Parker Twombly, Jr. in Lexington, Virginia on April 25, 1928 and died on July 5th 2011 in Rome, Italy. As of 1947 Twombly studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, followed by the Washington and Lee University in Lexington in 1949–50.

Franz Xaver
Winterhalter (b. 1805 Menzenschwand, Germany, d. 1875 Frankfurt
am Main, Germany), was a German painter. He was born in a
small village in Germany’s Black Forest, Franz Xaver Winterhalter
left his home to study painting at the academy in Munich. Before
becoming court painter to Louis-Philippe, the king of France, he
joined a circle of French artists in Rome. In 1835, after he
painted the German Grand Duke and Duchess of Baden, Winterhalter’s
international career as a court portrait painter was launched.
Although he never received high praise for his work in his native
Germany, the royal families of England, France, and Belgium all
commissioned him to paint portraits. His monumental canvases
established a substantial popular reputation, and lithographic
copies of the portraits helped to spread his fame.
